I've been a fine arts photographer for over fifty years and everyday I see and learn something new. Nature photography is my passion.
Macro photography allows me to view up close and personal every inch of the wee creatures who are busily working to shape the ecosystems of our world. Butterflies are a very delicate, finely tuned species and they respond to the slightest ecological vibration. Respect for their habitat is paramount.
Butterflies have different lifespans, some small Blues may live less than a week, Brushfoots such as the Monarchs and Mourning Cloaks may live nine months if they don't fall prey to predators. Bearing that in mind, observing a quarter inch Eastern Tailed-Blue butterfly mate with his partner on a blade of grass as his sperm pooled into a droplet that reflected the world around him was completely magical. To see a one inch damselfly with its newly captured breakfast resting upon a dew speckled blade of grass was a highlight and a respite from my overly technical life.
I feel blessed to be able to witness nature in all its magnificent moments, and I hope my work brings you a sense of enjoyment and wonder too!
